Have you used AI in the last month to complete homework?
If the honest answer is yes, you are not alone. Research by the UK’s National
Literacy Trust reported that over 60 per cent of students used AI for help with
homework. Or, maybe you are one of a growing number of students who don’t
want to admit to using AI because of stigma attached to ‘cheating.’ Either way,
AI is becoming part of everyday learning for most students. Your challenge is to
use AI to complement and strengthen your learning.
In this guide, you will:
Students are already beginning to use GenAI tools (such as ChatGPT-5.2,
Microsoft Copilot, Grammarly, Perplexity AI, Gemini and many others) for a
range of purposes, such as: correcting work for grammatical errors;
summarising complex topics; brainstorming ideas for essays; breaking down
complex concepts or specific vocabulary; exploring different viewpoints;
citing external sources or links; receiving immediate feedback and getting
help with structuring work. Outputs can look correct but be biased and
incorrect.

Homework Example – Worldwide Pandemics
Jack was required to submit a 200-word summary on the topic Worldwide
Pandemics. His class was given one week to complete the task. The night
before submission Jack prompted an AI tool to:
■ Provide reliable historical information on recent pandemics, including
source images
■ Pick an example that no one else might use
■ Check my chosen example for grammatical and spelling errors

Generative AI is a specific subset of AI that has been trained on large datasets
to produce something new, like text, images, or code. Examples include creating
realistic images from text inputs, writing and summarising text, generating
computer code, producing original music and talking with you like a real person.
GenAI is a type of technology that learns by example, but these examples are
not necessarily verified in the same way a human expert might do so. Therefore,
there are ongoing concerns about bias.
