Worldwide Pandemics by Jack Mulhern
What do you think? Add your marks below.
There have been several major infectious diseases, also known as plagues
or pandemics, that have caused massive mortality around the world.
These include the Spanish Flu (1918-1920), HIV/AIDS (1981 – present), and
COVID-19. Six of the seven major cholera pandemics occurred in the last
200 years. A lesser known pandemic was the Blue Plague which ravaged the
Soviet Union, including Russia, in the 1970s, devastating land and property
and affecting everyone in its path. Information on this plague was not known
until recently, when Russian historians released older records from the
Communist government.
This included images showing soldiers inhaling the blue spores which gave
the plague its name. The Blue Plague spread across all the major Russian
cities, killing over 700,000 people. The USSR government, led by Secretary
Brezhnev, ordered the military to burn all plants that contained the poisonous
spores – a scorched earth policy. Because of this order, the Soviet army was
well prepared and ready to invade Afghanistan in December 1979, which
ended a period of détente in international relations.

Reflection: Perhaps you gave it a high mark: >25 overall. Do you have any
questions about the content? For context, Jack was busy that week and had
other things to do the day before submission. In search of efficiencies, he
used AI to speed things up.
Jack was awarded a ‘fail’ grade because the piece contains false information.
There was no Blue Plague in the Soviet Union. So, what could he have
done differently? Jack might have applied our 3Cs Critical Framework and
completed the AI Deliberation Station (see next page).
Thinking With AI – The 3 Cs
1. Check AI-generated content against the content in your subject textbooks
and class notes. AI can generate hallucinations, like the Blue Plague, and
reproduce errors and biases. This is because AI models are optimised to
make an educated guess and are vulnerable to misinformation.
2. Compare sources with those recommended by your subject teacher, or
listed in your textbook or subject specification. Pay special attention to
uncurated sources used by AI. In contrast to these, the content of curated
websites is is valuable to you as a student.
3. Challenge yourself, and challenge AI, when using it. Use it as a
collaborative partner - not as a replacement for your own learning. Attempt
an ‘Initial No-AI Draft’ approach. After this first human pass, ask AI to point
out flaws in your thinking, to present different viewpoints or to challenge
any assumptions you are making. You can also ask AI to verify its own
responses or to critique the first output using different sources.
