AI’s Energy Footprint
Training GPT-4 is estimated to have consumed around 62.3 GWh of electricity,
which is enough to power 1000s of homes per annum. The yearly electricity
consumption for running ChatGPT is estimated at 100s of GWh (gigawatthours), which is the equivalent of powering a small country, like Finland or
Belgium, for a day, or charging millions of electric cars. This means we need
to be very conscious of how we use AI for our planet and our learning.

On January 3rd 2026, Dianna Mason pasted the text of the American
Declaration of Independence into AI detection software. Forbes, a global
media company, reported Mason’s results. Detection software falsely flagged
the actual text of the 1776 American Declaration as being 98.5% likely
generated by AI. This error mirrors what many students face in the unchecked
and irresponsible use of AI.
Into the future, the design of AI is likely to change further in ways that make
it more useful to students who need to learn and practice processes to
complete a task. And your school will introduce guidelines around AI use, if it
has not already done so.
In the meantime, this guide should help you to develop the knowledge and
skills necessary to judge when and why AI might be foe, or friend.
