In this section, we explain our Three-Step Revision System which has
contributed to the success of thousands of students. The system is designed
to help you take control of study and revision, and then to perform to the
best of your ability in exams and assessments. The system can be used by
students at all stages of post primary education, no matter your age. All that it
requires from you is some self-discipline and planning.
Organise all your resources by subject and
cross check whether anything is missing.
If so, plug any gaps so that you are ready to
begin our Three-Step System with everything
to hand.

Step One: Map
A syllabus or specification is an overview of your subject content. Typically,
each subject is comprised of sections or units and then subsections of
content, known as topic s. Your teachers use the syllabus or specification to
guide their week-by-week lesson plans.
Start your revision as early as possible. 100 days prior to exams is
recommended for GCSE and A-level studies but not all students can or will be
able to set aside this time. If you are in Years 7-9 at school, then 30-40 days
is a suitable start date. You will need to set aside some planning time too,
which is an essential part of study and exam preparation. We recommend that
you spend five per cent of your total revision time on planning. In the table
below we outline the amount of time you should allocate to each stage of our
Revision system. In the pages we lay out the specific the specific tasks related
to MAP, CREATE, RETRIEVE.

Your first step in the revision process is to set the scene by establishing
exactly what it is that you need to know. Mapping is an excellent summary
tool that enables you to see the content of each subject on one large page:
ideally A3 dimensions. This map will also include topics and sub-topics, as
shown in the A-Level Biology syllabus map overleaf.
Alternatively, if you are in Years 7-9, your summer revision map might
resemble the smaller illustration below, where each subject is listed, along
with the revision topics in each. Having a one-page overview will help
ensure you to crosscheck what has been taught within each subject or unit
and you can identify areas of strength and weakness, including any gaps in
knowledge. You can also record the number of times you review each topic
(in Step Three) by inserting a ✔ beside each.
Mapping out your subjects and topics, or a revision map, will likely take
several attempts to develop your system of work and minimise any errors or
omissions. These attempts are not time wasted, however. Instead, your brain
is already engaged in the revision process as you build up your concentration
stamina, strengthen your neural pathways and, ultimately, your subject
knowledge.

Depending on your age and stage of education, you will require access
to either the syllabus for each subject or a shorter revision list. Ask your
subject teacher for a syllabus or revision topic list if you are unsure where to
find yours. You can also locate your subject specification from the relevant
website of examination bodies.
